About the directorate

The Department of Research, Extension, Innovation, and Resource Mobilization (REIRM) is the engine of knowledge preservation, creation and societal impact at Kisii University. Our identity is borderless and inclusive, we believe research and innovation are vital bridges connecting scholarly excellence to tangible global progress.

At Kisii University we empower scholars, students, and partners to generate and apply high-impact knowledge through five interconnected pillars:

Research, Innovation & Commercialisation: Cultivating curiosity-driven and solution-oriented inquiry across Health, Agriculture, Applied Sciences, Environmental Conservation, ICT, Socio-Economics, Law, Education, and Culture, while translating discoveries into practical technologies and enterprises.

Extension & Community Engagement: Fostering reciprocal relationships between the university, industry and communities, ensuring research is co-created and responsive to local and global challenges and actively championing environmental sustainability through community-embedded initiatives, including tree planting and reforestation drives, climate-smart agriculture demonstrations, and biodiversity awareness programs thus building local capacity for long-term environmental stewardship.

Strategic Partnerships & Collaborations: Forging robust linkages with international and local universities, industry, and development partners to fuel joint research, exchanges, and shared resources.

Capacity Building & Knowledge Dissemination: Nurturing the next generation of researchers through training, mentorship, and the dissemination of high-quality scholarship via publications, seminars, and conferences.

Grant Management and Resource Mobilization: Securing and administering research grants, endowments and other financial and material resources to support academic programmes, research infrastructure; drafting compelling, data driven research and project proposals for submission to donors; building relationships with funding bodies, governments and international partners, corporate foundations and philanthropic organizations.

Annual Events to Look Out for:

International Multidisciplinary Conference (Annually (June)): A premier platform for researchers, scholars, and practitioners to exchange knowledge, present findings, and discuss emerging trends across disciplines. Recent themes have focused on global health, sustainable development, and inclusive knowledge systems.

Innovation Week (Annually (April)): The flagship event of the REIRM Department, bringing together students, researchers, industry leaders, and development partners to showcase innovations that matter. Features exhibitions, keynote lectures, pitching competitions, workshops, and an awards ceremony celebrating SDG-aligned innovations.

Public Lectures (Quarterly): At various times across the year, the REIRM office organizes formal, accessible presentations delivered by experts to a general audience and designed to share knowledge; spark public interest and foster civic awareness on universally relevant themes ranging from societal issues and scientific breakthroughs to economics, politics, culture and other contemporary topics.

We are committed to creating an enabling environment where every individual (staff, student, or partner) has the opportunity to excel. By embedding inclusivity and fostering open collaboration, we aim to position Kisii University as a globally recognized institution renowned for its research, consultancy, innovation, and extension efforts. We benchmark against leading global universities, aligning our practices with international standards to ensure our contributions are recognized worldwide.
